PC World Advert Doesn’t Sell Computers

It’s interesting to see how one retailers are adapting its offer to the changes in consumer demands. Last night I saw a new advert from PC World and it struck me how the computer products retailer is re-inventing itself.

The advert is about a man who loves to watch films and the message is that PC World can help him design a home entertainment centre with his PC.

The difference here is that PC World has switched from selling computer equipment to selling dreams. Gone are the shots of people walking down aisles to be received by smart, friendly shop staff. Instead is a talking head embellished with special-effects. Hollywood star Christian Slater even makes an appearance, so it’s obvious PC World has spent a lot of money on this campaign and it’s a sign that it is committed to changing the way shoppers see it.

It has responded to the changing relationship consumers have with computer equipment. PC World stores have up to now been associated with geeks, who want to improve or customise their computers. The core shopper would have had a degree of specialist knowledge about the products.

Now, home computing is ubiquitous and many shoppers are so familiar with them that they are rarely thought of at all. People don’t say “I need to buy a computer”, they say “I want to store and watch films digitally”.

It’s similar to the proposition of perfume. People don’t buy perfume, they buy desirability.

PC World is reacting to this shift in consumer perceptions to its core product and should be applauded for doing so. It’s this adaptability that provides longevity and survivability in tough times. We see it in some of the best retailers and it’s often lacking in those that go under.

    I caught that ad (which is unusual - now I have a digital video recorder I very rarely get to see any ads). I, too, marveled at the shift in tone. But two things struck me.

    First, are PC World's staff capable of delivering on the dream? Whenever I've been in there, they've been pretty clueless - asking them anything about the techie stuff in the ad (effectively, how to create a wireless media server) might end up disappointing shoppers.

    Second, they're effectively selling advice for law-breakers. Sure, you might buy movies in iTunes (in which case, get Apple TV to beam them to your living-room, job done). But ripping DVDs is legally questionable. I'll wager the majority of films stuck on hard drives are torrented.

    (I'd also quibble with the description of PC World as a techy's shop. Maplin, yes. But PC World always struck me as the place a Dixons shopper would go for hardware and software. And I imagine most techies have been shopping online for quite a while...)

    It is a massive step-change in the way they (PCW) portray themselves to the UK consumer. Sadly I think a well produced TV ad is a complete waste of time and money.

    I second what MondoBnet says. All very well saying that they will create dreams, when you get into a store, does that happen. More like I am sold a nightmare.

    I am approached by a spotty oik who knows less than me about computers (and I know little) who then recommends something not meeting my needs and consequently tries to sell me a warranty before I have even bought the product.

    I respond favourably to the advert....but I wonder if PC World staff will live up to the promise the brand is making to customers. If not, and the customer experience is awful, the ads will backfire dramatically. Advertising is the last step in creating a brand - once the rest of the company/services have fully embraced the values. Time will tell.
